초록
This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of eight seaweeds (Asparagopsis taxiformis from Namwon and Seogwipo, ASTN and ASTS; Leathesia marina, LEM; Scytosiphon lomentaria, SCL; Punctaria latifolia, PULl; Grateloupia sp., GR; Cladophora opaca, CLO; Dictyota dichotoma, DID) on the in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics, gas production, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) profiles when incubated with 0.5 g of primary substrate (rice straw:concentrate ratio = 3:7). The rumen fluid was collected from three rumen-cannulated Hanwoo steers and mixed with McDougall buffer (v:v=1:3 ratio). Each seaweed was added at 5% basis of primary substrate in the bottle and incubated at 24 and 48 h. Total gas production in all treatments was not significantly different compared to control (CON), whereas methane production and the proportion of methane were significantly decreased in ASTN and ASTS treatments at 24 and 48 h incubation. Total VFA production was significantly lower in the LEM, SCL, and GL treatments compared to CON at 48 h. At 48 h incubation, ASTN and ASTS treatments showed a decrease in the proportions of acetate and iso-valerate and the acetate-to-propionate ratio compared to CON, whereas the proportions of propionate, butyrate, and valerate increased. Therefore, ASTN and ASTS are potential methane abatement agents, but further in vivo experiment should be conducted to evaluate its safety as an additive.
Abstract
