‘디아스포라와 번역’이란 연구 프로젝트의 일환으로 쓰여진 이 글에서는 W. G. 제발트의 디아스포라적인 삶과 그의 글쓰기를 대표적 사례로 분석하였다. 모든 사회적, 정치적 문제를 경제적 차원에서 해결하려는 전후 독일의 정책에 비판적인 입장을 취했던 제발트가 1978년 독일을 떠나 영국으로 이주한 것은 여러 면에서 상징적인 의미를 지닌다. 그가 생의 마지막까지 자발적 이주민으로 살았듯이, ‘기억’, ‘이주’, ‘고향 상실’, ‘정체성’ 등의 주제는 작가 자신의 생애뿐 아니라 그의 등장인물들의 삶을 관통한다. 또한 그가 끝까지 독일어로 글을 썼다는 사실은 디아스포라적인 현실에서 자신의 언어적 정체성을 여전히 독일어에서 찾고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그의 주요 작품들은 영어로 번역되면서 전 세계적으로 유명해졌는데, 그의 글의 특징이 ‘멜랑코리적’이라고 불리게 된 데는 마이클 헐스의 영어 번역의 영향이 크다. 이런 점에서 이 글에서는 마이클 헐스의 번역본을 원문과 대조하여, 때로는 원 저자와 번역자의 문체적, 기질적 성향의 차이에서, 때로는 문화적 차이에서 비롯된 구문론적 현상들을 논의하였다. 나아가 제발트 자신의 창작적 글쓰기 또한 번역과 불가분의 관계에 있는데, 여기서는 텍스트 상호간의 차원과 예술 장르 간의 차원으로 구분하여 다루었다. 텍스트의 차원에서 보자면 그는 다른 작가들의 수많은 텍스트들을 자신의 작품 속에 직·간접적으로 사용하는데, 이에 대해 ‘유사-번역’이란 개념을 적용하였다. 이때 유사-번역의 개념에는 독창적인 문체나 주제를 실험하기 위해 의도적으로 사용되는 번역문체라는 의미도 포함된다. 나아가 예술 장르 간의 번역은 제발트가 자신의 텍스트 속에 수많은 사진이나 그림 등을 삽입하여, 문자 텍스트를 시각적 이미지로 번역한 것을 가리킨다. 이 같은 현상에 대해 이 글에서는 ‘그림쓰기 Ekphrais’라는 수사적 개념과 ‘건축적 번역’이란 개념으로 설명하고자 했다. 제발트는 이 같은 글쓰기 방식을 통해 역사 속에서 잊혀진 인물이나 사건들을 다시 불러내고, 일어난 사실의 흔적을 지워버리려는 사람들의 의도적, 자연적 망각에 저항하며 독자들의 문화적 기억을 촉구한다.
