Abstract
Abused children are known to exhibit a number of behavior problems though individual variations have also been reported. School life is particularly important for children's adjustment and development, potentially protecting children exposed to stressful life events such as abuse. While the topic of school life has widely been examined in literature, studies examining its role as a potential mediator for children under stress are quite limited. By using the Supplemental Survey on Children of the Korean Welfare Panel Study, this study examines the dynamic of experiences of abuse, school life, and externalized behavior problems. Findings show that children's experiences of abuse are both directly and indirectly related to behavior problems, and that their school life partially mediates the effect of abuse on development of externalized behavior problems. Furthermore, multi-group analyses by gender also revealed that the relationship varied between boys and girls. Based on such findings, clinical implications are provided.
