Abstract
Purpose: This study examined the measurement invariance and latent mean differences of the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS; Diener et al., 1985) between individuals with and without disabilities, using data from the 2023 Happiness Survey of Koreans (Heo et al., 2023). Method: Participants included 199 individuals with disabilities and 16,106 individuals without disabilities. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to test configural, metric, scalar, and residual invariance. Reliability (Cronbach’s α, CR) and convergent validity (AVE) were also examined. Reliability and validity indices were satisfactory (α = .911 / .860; CR = .907 / .860; AVE = .668 / .552). Results: The single-factor model showed the best fit for both groups, and measurement invariance was supported up to the residual level. The latent mean of life satisfaction was significantly higher in the non-disabled group (latent Cohen’s d = .368). Conclusion: The Korean SWLS used in the 2023 Happiness Survey of Koreans is a reliable and valid instrument for both groups. It can serve as a common tool for comparing life satisfaction between individuals with and without disabilities. Further research should examine other Korean translations and establish a standardized validated version of the SWLS.
