Abstract
This study identified latent subgroups of high school students based on patterns of emotional and behavioral problems and examined differences among the groups in academic engagement, academic helplessness, and career adaptability. Data were drawn from the fifth wave of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018), conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute. The sample consisted of 2,252 second-year high school students in 2022. Latent profile analysis was performed using five dimensions of emotional and behavioral problems: depression, social withdrawal, somatic symptoms, attention problems, and aggression. Four distinct latent groups emerged: the moderate-level emotional and behavioral problems group (48.3%), the low-level emotional and behavioral problems group (25.3%), the attention problems-aggression group (6.5%), and the high-level emotional and behavioral problems group (19.9%). Statistically significant differences were found across all outcome variables. The low-level emotional and behavioral problems group demonstrated the highest academic engagement and career adaptability, along with the lowest levels of academic helplessness. In contrast, the high-level emotional and behavioral problems group generally exhibited adverse outcomes across all domains. Notably, the attention problems-aggression group showed an academic engagement level that was statistically comparable to that of the highest group, while exhibiting the highest academic helplessness and the lowest career adaptability. These findings suggest that not only the overall severity but also the specific configuration of emotional and behavioral problems can be differentially associated with adolescents’ academic and career adjustment. The study offers insights that may inform the design of tailored educational and counseling interventions based on a nuanced understanding of students’ emotional and behavioral profiles.
