초록

연구목적: 본 연구는 중도장애인들의 사별경험과 애도의 문제에 주목하여 그에 필요한 지원을 탐색하고자 하였다. 연구방법: 이를 위해 중도장애인들이 부모를 비롯한 가까운 사람의 죽음을 어떤 방식으로 경험하게 되는지 살펴보고, 그에 따른 애도가 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지, 이들의 애도를 지원하기 위한 방법은 무엇인지 논의하였다. 또한 이들의 애도를 지원하기 위해서 조력자들에게 요구되는 태도가 무엇인지 성찰해보았다. 연구결과: 중도장애인들은 기존의 죽음개념을 완전히 이해할 수 없다고 하더라도 삶에서의 여러 경험을 통해서 죽음에 대해 알고 있다. 이들에게 가까운 사람의 상실은 슬픔의 감정을 불러일으킬 뿐만 아니라 생활의 커다란 변화를 가져오기 때문에 비장애인의 경우보다 더욱 충격적인 경험이 된다. 그럼에도 이들은 가까운 사람들과 작별하고 애도할 수 있는 기회에서 제외되는 경우가 많다. 따라서 중도장애인들에게 죽음을 보다 직접적이고 구체적으로 경험할 수 있도록 하여 상실에 대한 이해와 수용을 도와야 한다. 또한 사별에 따른 복합적인 감정을 언어, 의식, 상징 등으로 표현하여 해소할 수 있도록 격려하고 지지하는 것이 중요하다. 결론: 중도장애인들 역시 애도를 통해 비로소 사별 이후의 삶에 적응할 수 있고, 나아가서 자기 자신의 죽음에 대한 이해와 준비도 가능해진다. 이를 위해서는 무엇보다도 죽음과 애도에 대한 조력자들의 자기성찰이 우선되어야 한다.

Abstract

Purpose: This study focused on the death loss and grief of people with severe disabilities and explored proper supports for their grief. Method: This study investigated how they experienced and grieved over the death of the close people including their parents and discussed to support their grief. This study also reflected upon which kind of attitude was needed for caregivers to assist them in mourning. Results: People with severe disabilities knew about death through their various experiences in life although they might not be fully understanding the conventional concept of death. Loss experiences changed many things in their lives, which could be a more shocking experience compared to that of people without disabilities. Yet they were often left out of the chances of grieving. It was needed to allow people with severe disabilities to gain more specific and hands-on experiences of death so they were aided to understand and engaged the loss. In addition, it was imperative to encourage them to express their complex feelings with a language, rituals, and symbols so they could resolve their complicated emotions. Conclusion: Through mourning process, they could get accustomed to the life after loss, understand their own death, and be prepared for it. In order to achieve that, caregivers needed to critically deal with their own attitudes towards death and grief and discuss them openly.
