Abstract
As the average life expectancy of people with intellectual disabilities increases, supporting their bereavement and loss of parents in older adulthood has become important. This qualitative study explored the bereavement and grief process of 21 middle-aged and older adults with intellectual disabilities after the death of their parents through in-depth interviews. Data analyses identified 14 subthemes related to four overarching themes. Study results show that after experiencing the death of their parents, participants often felt excluded from the grief process of parental bereavement in the family and experienced strong feelings of sadness and longing. In the grief process, they experienced unresolved emotions toward their deceased parents and did not resolve their grief-related emotions through bereavement. The study findings emphasize the need for social work interventions that help middle-aged and older adults with intellectual disabilities cope with the loss of their parents. This study provided an important basis for providing education on death, loss, and bereavement support interventions for middle-aged and older adults with intellectual disabilities, support for families to participate in grief rituals, and training for practitioners supporting bereavement.
