대학생들이 진로탐색 과정에서 겪는 경험: 근거이론적 접근

이 연구는 대학 4학년을 대상으로 진로탐색과정에서 겪는 경험을 근거 이론적 접근을 통해 분석하였다. 구체적으로는 대학생들의 진로탐색이 구체화되는 상황과 배경, 그것을 통한 경험과 대처 방법, 어떤 과정을 통해 진로탐색을 하게 되는 지, 진로탐색과정에서의 경험은 어떠한 맥락적 상황과 상호작용하는지 등에 대해 대학에 재학 중인 4학년 15명을 대상으로 비 구조화된 심층면담을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 자료는 Strauss와 Corbin(1998)의 근거 이론적 접근 방법을 적용하여 분석하였고 이를 통해 주요개념과 범주를 도출하고 패러다임 모형을 제시하였다. 연구 결과, 진로 결정시기를 맞이한 대학생들의 진로탐색과정에서 도출된 중심현상은 불안과 혼란으로 나타났다. 이것은 졸업 시기를 맞이한 인과적 상황과 지속되는 취업난, 부모의 퇴직으로 인한 경제적 상황악화 그리고 부모님의 기대와 진로결정을 위한 시간과 정보의 부족이라는 맥락적 상황 속에서 발생하였다. 불안과 혼란의 중심현상은 자신에 대한 이해와 직업세계 이해라는 중재적 조건하에서 작용/상호작용의 결과로 자기탐색과 직무탐색이 일어났다. 그 결과 자신을 재발견하고 삶에 대한 인식이 변화하였다. 참여 대학생들의 진로탐색과정에서 나타난 핵심범주는 ‘주체적 삶의 시작’이었으며, 이는 자율적인 경력 주체로서 독립적인 삶을 시작함을 의미한다. 이 연구는 진로 주체인 학생들이 진로탐색과정에서 겪는 경험을 자신의 진로를 구성해가는 과정으로서 살펴보았다는 것에 의의를 가지며, 향후 진로 지도와 진로 상담에 있어 진로를 구성하는 개인적, 맥락적 영향요인들 간의 상호작용을 이해하는데 도움을 줄 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore experiences during career exploration of university students using grounded theory approach. For this purpose, this study identified the contextual situations and backgrounds to concrete career exploration, the process of career exploration focused on their experiences and coping, and interactions between experiences and contextual situations. Data were collected from unstructured in-depth interviews with 15 senior university students, and analyzed by the procedure suggested by Strauss & Corbin(1998)’s grounded theory method producing key concepts and categories with the paradigm model. The result showed that the central phenomenon during career exploration process was ‘anxiety & confusion’. It occurred in the casual conditions once facing graduation time and this phenomenon also is affected by contextual conditions ‘continual unemployment difficult’ and ‘the personal financial problem’ caused by parent’s retirement and ‘lacking of time and information gathering’ for career decision making. In the phenomenon of anxiety & confusion, the intervening conditions as ‘self understanding’ and ‘the understanding of real work world’ promoted this phenomenon and its result of interaction was ‘self-exploration’ and ‘job exploration’ as action/interaction. Finally, the consequence of this career exploration process was ‘self-rediscovery’, ‘change of life perception’ and ‘career discovery’. The core category for career exploration was identified as ‘starting of independent life’, which means the beginning of independent life as a self-regulating career agency. This study implies that students construct their careers during the process of career exploration and contributes understanding of interactions of individual and contextual factors in one’s career construction for career guidance and counseling.
