선진시기 ‘也’의 기능 및 품사 再考

본고는 선진시기 문중과 문말에 출현하는 ‘也’의 기능에 대해 통합적인 모색을 시도하였다. 초기 문법학자들은 선진시기 ‘也’의 출현 위치에 따라 문중과 문말로 구분하고 문중에서는 휴지나 강조 등을 나타내는 어기사로 문말에서는 판단이나 확신 등을 나타내는 어기사로 보아 두 위치에 출현하는 ‘也’를 별개의 기능을 갖는 것으로 취급하였다. 그러나 후대로 오면서 점차 ‘也’의 기능을 통합적으로 보는 시각이 생겨났다. 예컨대 문중과 문말에 출현하는 ‘也’는 모두 판단 어기를 나타낸다거나 혹은 초점이나 대조와 같은 강조 어기를 담당한다고 보았다. 본고 역시 ‘也’의 출현 위치에 관계없이 그 기능을 통합할 수 있다면 통합하는 것이 문법의 경제성 측면에서 효용이 크다는 입장이다. 다만 문말과 문중에 출현하는 ‘也’의 기능을 판단 혹은 강조로 포괄할 수 있는 지에 대해서는 회의적이다. 이에 본고는 이른바 판단 어기설과 강조 어기설을 재검토하고 선진시기 ‘也’는 명사구 조사로 기능함을 밝혔다.
Abstract
This study attempted to make an integrated search for the function of ‘也’ that appears at the middle and the end of sentences in the pre-Qin period. Early grammarians distinguished the middle of a sentence and the end of a sentence depending on the location of the advent of ‘也’ in the pre-Quin period, while they see that ‘也’ has separate function that appears in two locations as a word to make a sentence that indicates pause and emphasis at the middle of a sentence and judgment and assurance at the end of a sentence. However, as time passes, the viewpoint seeing the function of ‘也’ integrated emerged. For example, ‘也’ appearing both at the middle of a sentence and at the end of a sentence was viewed as a sign that emphasizes the constituent in front of ‘也’, such as focus or contrast, or a word of judgment. This study also has a point of view that integrating functions is useful in terms of the effectiveness of grammar if it is possible, regardless of the location of the appearance of ‘也’. However, it is doubtful whether the function of ‘也’ appearing at the end and middle of sentences can be regarded as judgment or emphasis. Therefore, this study reexamines the modal particle of judgment theory and modal particle of emphasis theory to examine their problems and reveal that ‘也’ in the pre-Qin period functions as a noun phrase post-position.
