Abstract
This paper explores the cultural philosophy of Xu Fuguan (徐復觀), one of the representative scholars of modern Neo-Confucianism. Modern Neo-Confucianism is a philosophical movement that critically inherits the Confucian tradition while embracing modern values such as democracy and science. Among its scholars, Xu Fuguan emphasized Confucian moral values and attempted to integrate them with Western philosophy. He focused on defining the identity and direction of Chinese culture, particularly asserting through the concept of “Metaphysical Centrality” (形而中學) that Chinese culture transcends the traditional distinction between Metaphysics (形而上學) and Empirical Studies (形而下學) to establish a unique system of thought. Through his comparative study of Chinese and Western cultures, Xu Fuguan analyzed that Chinese culture has developed around the principles of moral self-cultivation and social harmony, while Western culture has evolved based on natural exploration and scientific reasoning. He argued that the two cultures form a complementary relationship and that a more balanced civilization could emerge by integrating China’s ethical traditions with the scientific rationality of the West. The core concept of his philosophy, “Heart-Mind” (心), embodies Confucian morality and human subjectivity, reflecting the fundamental characteristics of Chinese culture. Xu Fuguan viewed the “Culture of Heart-Mind” (心的文化) as the key to realizing moral ideals, considering it the ultimate goal of Confucian philosophy. Based on this, he sought ways to ensure both the continuity of Chinese culture and its adaptation to modernity.
