Abstract
This paper reinterprets Kang Youwei’s Datong Shu(大同書) from the perspective of biospheric egalitarianism, critically examining the ecological-philosophical significance and limitations of his thought. Focusing on the chapter “Abolishing the Distinction Between Humans and Animals to Love All Living Beings,” it analyzes the ethical structure of universal equality by exploring the relationships between humans and animals, technological civilization, and moral progress. While Western ecological philosophy arose from reflections on industrial civilization, Kang’s thought represents an Eastern ethical universalism grounded in Confucian Ren(仁) and Buddhist compassion(慈悲). Moving beyond political or social interpretations, this study illuminates Datong Shu as a vision of universal life ethics within East Asian philosophy, tracing the emergence and development of biospheric egalitarian ideas in modern East Asian thought and contributing to the search for philosophical alternatives in the current age of ecological crisis.
