Abstract

This paper examines the structural causes of the comprehensive crisis of life faced by humanity in the 21st century—including climate change, ecological disasters, social inequality, and isolation—within the complex framework of ideas and civilization rooted in the mechanistic worldview, anthropocentrism, individualism, and capitalist consumer civilization of modern Western thought. As alternative discourse to these challenges, it engages with the philosophies of Classical Confucianism, Neo-Confucianism, Joseon Confucianism, and especially the modern reconfiguration known as K-Confucianism, emphasizing a philosophy of life renewal (saengsalim) and the relational worldview of ‘oneness of all things.’ Centering on key concepts of K-Confucianism—‘saengsaeng’ (life-generating), the ‘oneness of all things,’ ‘silsim’ (actualized mind), and ‘gam-tong’ (responsive resonance), this paper empirically explores the relationship, continuity, and interdependence of life, involving Classical and Neo-Confucian thought, Joseon-era Sung Confucianism, Yangming studies, Practical Learning, and even cases from texts on filial sons and daughters. In particular, it analyzes concrete practices in which filial piety (hyo), benevolence (in), the mind of compassion (ceukeun-jisim), ‘silsim-liangzhi’ (realized conscience), and ‘gam-tong’ expand their application from family and society to neighbors, communities, nature, and future generations. Through this, it reveals how the ethics of K-Confucianism have developed beyond kinship-based familism into a life-community ethic embracing the vulnerable, others, the environment, and generations to come. Furthermore, through ‘silsim’ and ‘gam-tong,’ the paper highlights an ethical vision of relational responsibility, solidarity, public-mindedness, and life equality that transcends barriers of status, class, and ethnicity. In conclusion, K-Confucian philosophical and practical approaches to life renewal do not merely inherit tradition or ideology but propose a philosophical and practical alternative for coping with today’s life crisis and ecological quandaries—advocating practical caring, and guidelines for living as a sustainable life community, where individuals, families, societies, and the natural environment are organically interconnected. Accordingly, the tradition of K-Confucianism carries global significance as a new reference point for the common good and ecological civilization, extending its relevance beyond East Asia.
