Abstract

This study examines how the music of three iconic female singers—Zhou Xuan, Teresa Teng, and Li Guyi—acquired cultural significance within their respective sociocultural contexts and became interconnected across time and space. Rather than viewing Zhou Xuan’s music as a relic of the past, this research interprets her work as a cultural bridge linking the past, present, and future. It traces how her emotional vocal style, particularly her signature qisheng (breathy voice) technique, was inherited and transformed by subsequent generations of popular singers. Zhou’s innovative style not only laid the foundation for modern Chinese popular music but also significantly influenced musical exchange and development across Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Teresa Teng reinterpreted Zhou Xuan’s classics with a modern sensibility, expanding the lyrical and emotional reach of Chinese popular music across Greater China and Southeast Asia. Her music functioned as a universal emotional language, transcending political ideologies. This emotional lineage continued with Li Guyi, who in 1980s reform-era China, inherited and adapted the musical traditions of Zhou and Teng. Li fused elegant melodies with a lyrical, folk-infused vocal style that resonated with the sentiment of a new era. Through an exploration of the musical trajectories of these three singers, this study re-evaluates the cultural roles and artistic significance of female vocalists in the historical development of Chinese popular music. It highlights the continuity of emotional expression and the evolving nature of vocal styles across different periods.
