Abstract
This paper challenges the grand narrative that frames the cultural transition of late 1970s China as a simple "rupture." Through a genealogical inquiry into the lyrical paradigm of popular songs from 1977 to 1979, it aims to answer a central puzzle: why did similar "leftist" critical discourses, prevalent both before and after the "Cultural Revolution," lead to diametrically opposed historical fates? To this end, the study establishes a three-dimensional analytical framework of "the Guided Subject" (the conditionality of emotion, the publicization of space, and the instrumentality of value), thereby redrawing the cultural map of this period, tracing a trajectory from "continuation" and "anxiety" to "revolution." The study finds that the lyrical practices of 1977 represented a "refined continuation" of the old paradigm. The year 1978, in contrast, was a period of "discursive negotiation" in which the structural contradiction between emerging subjective desires and the obsolete ideological shell—termed here as "Subject Anxiety"—was vividly manifested. Furthermore, the paper argues that the triumph of the song Xiang Lian (乡恋) in 1979 was a thorough "paradigm revolution," accomplished by constructing an entirely new "Autonomous Subject." The paper ultimately clarifies that the success of this revolution was not a purely artistic event, but rather the "product" of a rare "confluence" at a specific historical juncture, where three historical forces converged: an eruption of the popular "structure of feeling," a shift in the state's "political agenda," and a localized response to the pressures of globalization. The study's ultimate theoretical contribution is the proposition of the "Lyrical Contract" as a core concept—a unique cultural mechanism for mediating between individual emotion and national identity—and it argues that this contract continues to profoundly shape mainstream culture in contemporary China to this day.
