Abstract
This study developed and evaluated a design-led intervention application that combines feedback, feedforward, incentives, and penalties to help children voluntarily regulate their smartphone use and increase physical activity. We conducted a ten-week Home User Test with children in four households, collecting daily smartphone usage times and step counts. We also gathered qualitative data through in-depth interviews to understand the contextual factors behind changes. Our analysis showed that the intervention helped reduce screen time for most participants and could increase physical activity for some. In particular, combining feedback and feedforward supported children’s planning and execution of healthier behaviors. However, we found that varying baseline activity levels and exercise motivations shaped how participants responded to incentives and penalties. These findings highlight both the potential and the limitations of behavior-change design strategies, offering practical insights for promoting healthier lifestyles among children.
