Abstract
With the advancement of mobility technology, the need for a new form factor is growing. However, the current fixed vehicle interface fails to fully meet drivers' diverse needs. This study addresses these limitations by proposing a new interface solution incorporating a shape-changing interface. To achieve this, the theoretical background of automotive interfaces and characteristics of shape-changing interfaces were analyzed, and design ideas were derived through user research. Based on the findings, a steering wheel-centered interface design was proposed, featuring tactile-based information delivery, tactile guidance via a display, and fast-switching functions. Additionally, macro functions ensuring consistency between two operation units and the integration of button and knob functions were introduced as auxiliary features. Thus, this study suggested an interface design according to a contextual map-based scenario, the possibility of tactile-based information delivery through expert interviews, and the need to improve the interface to enable intuitive operation in terms of consideration of safety. This study may contribute to the stagnant automotive interface market by presenting a shape-changing interface solution that reflects user needs and expectations.
