제프 핸델의 저서 『Sinography』(2019)와 한국의 차자 표기

본고에서는 제프 핸델(Zev Handel)의 저서인 『Sinography』(2019)에서 제시된 한자 변용방식을 비판적으로 고찰한 후, 이를 바탕으로 한국의 차자표기 전반의 한자 변용 양상을 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 제프 핸델 교수가 한국의 차자표기에서는 관찰되지 않는다고 하였던 PAL(음성적으로 변용된 표어자), SPAL(의미적ㆍ음성적으로 변용된 표어자)이 한국의 향찰, 이두, 석독구결에서 활발히 쓰이고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 새로운 회의자나 음성부 결합자를 만들어내는 것이 아니라, 의미 요소를 나타내는 두 글자를 연쇄하거나 음성 요소를 나타내는 두 글자를연쇄하여 형태소를 표기하는 경우가 존재함도 살펴보았다. 아울러 형태소 표기를 중시하는 석독구결의 구결자와 음성 표기를 중시하는 음독구결의 구결자의 비교를 통해, 한국의 한자 변용은 표어자 중심에서 표음자 중심으로 변화해 갔을 가능성에 대해서도 고찰해 보았다.
Abstract
In this paper, we critically examined the methods of Chinese character adaptation presented in Zev Handel’s Sinography(2019), and based on this, we examined the patterns of Chinese character adaptation across Korean vernacular writings. As a result, we found that PALs (Phonetically-Adapted Logograms) and SPALs (Semantically-Phonetically-Adapted Logograms), which Professor Zev Handel claimed were not observed in Korean vernacular writings, are actively used in Hyangchal, Idu, and Seokdok-Kugyol. We also found that morphemes are not only represented by creating new innovated sinograms, but also by linking two sinograms that represent semantic elements or linking two sinograms that represent phonetic elements. Through a comparison of the morpheme-oriented sinograms of the Seokdok-Kugyol and the phonetic-oriented sinograms of the Eumdok-Kugyol, we also explore the possibility that Chinese character adaptation in Korea may have shifted from Logographic to Phonographic.
