Abstract
In 1862, Lee Hyun-seo(1791-1862) built a monument to honor his ancestors by selecting letters written by Kim Saeng(later 711-791), a famous writer of Unified Silla Dynasty. Kim Saeng was a highly regarded calligrapher during the Joseon Dynasty, but Kim Saeng’s Jipjabi(集字碑), a monument engraved with the letters of Kim Saeng, was produced only in small quantities, enough to hold five pieces. Since the uniformity of all characters is an important factor in the jipjabi(集字碑), the tombstone or rubbing of a stone inscription used as the original must have a constant font size. However, original script of Lee Haeng-won’s Memorial Stone, Stele for Great Preceptor Nanggong, Baekwolseounptapbi, at Taeja Temple(太子寺 朗空大師 白月栖雲塔碑)(954) was not preferred as a jipjabi(集字碑) because the letters were different in size and Chinese typeface as Kim Saeng’s Jipjabi(集字碑). The number of characters in Lee Haeng-won’s Memorial Stone is 2,000, with 1,430 characters (69.5%) engraved in the original Baekwolseuptobbi and 628 characters (30.5%) not in the original. The same letters of the two gravestones were transcribed and engraved according to preference or selected from among several characters such as the same. The letters that are not in Baekwolseounptapbi were made with the combination and division of a radical of Chinese characters to protect the intent of Kim Saeng’s Calligraphy. It can be assumed that Lee Hyun-seo was well versed in a epigraphy and calligraphy through the construction of the Jipjabi(集字碑), and that the result was reflected in the construction of the Lee Haeng-won’s Memorial Stone.
