Abstract
This treatise seeks to interpret the recurring image of the “woman (women) with an expressionless face” that has appeared in women’s narratives since Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, as a meaningful response to the anti-feminist backlash. The disaffected image of women functions as a strategy to break through the affective impasse of feminist movements that often culminate in the discourse of occupying the position of the victim. In the primary works examined here— Intimate Stranger, Anna, and The Glory—disaffection can be read as a mode of existence for lower-class women in the neoliberal era. Intimate Stranger presents the discourse of female ambition from the perspective of a lower-class woman, revising what had previously been associated with middle-class femininity. The protagonist, Lee Yu-mi, maintains an disaffected mode of being to sustain a fragile sense of happiness—even though the neoliberal order offers no concrete promise of fulfillment. In its drama adaptation Anna, Yu-mi’s failed attempt at class passing exposes the gendered hierarchy embedded within neoliberal meritocracy. Her subtly anxious and secretive face betrays both her complicity with and her discord against the neoliberal logic of success. In The Glory, Moon Dong-eun’s impassive face signifies a more deliberate form of resistance: she refuses the ideology of normalcy intertwined with neoliberal meritocracy. Yet Dong-eun is also accused of contradiction—despising the laws and norms saturated with neoliberal logic while fully embracing meritocratic principles to accomplish her revenge. Thus, the cold, affectless faces of these women aesthetically register their precarious position—simultaneously complicit with and resistant to the system. What remains clear, however, is that their expressionless faces articulate a political will: a refusal to remain in the position of the victim. By the time of The Old Woman with the Knife(Pagua), the woman’s affectless face confronts a new form of backlash sentimentality—specifically, the affect of nostalgia generated by familialism. Overcoming this affective regression, this essay argues, constitutes one of the central tasks for contemporary women’s narratives.
