Abstract
Under today’s neoliberal system, emotional laborers are no longer confined to the management of feelings but are structured as affective subjects who are required to produce and circulate emotions throughout the labor process. This study aims to analyze the meaning of “affect” as represented in the emotional labor narratives of young Korean women under neoliberalism and to explore how these narratives articulate the socio-affective crises and the potential for resistance experienced by female youth subjects. To this end, the study employs the theoretical frameworks of Lauren Berlant and Sara Ahmed, focusing on Kim Eui-kyung’s novel Call Center (2018). It examines the affective circulation mechanisms embedded in the narrative of young female emotional laborers and the ways in which these mechanisms give rise to formations of an affective class. Through this analysis, the paper reveals how the female protagonists in Call Center escape the conventional narrative frame that reduces them to passive victims and instead emerge as agents who construct their own defense mechanisms and survival strategies within the ambiguity of affect. Furthermore, by interpreting the novel’s representation of the call center’s working environment, labor conditions, the stagnation of emotional laborers, and the deferred present and future of young women through an affective lens, this study seeks to illuminate the political possibilities inherent in the literary representation of emotional labor.
