Abstract
The musicians who went to North Korea was lifted in 1988, restoration and research on works were actively conducted. In particular, those who had a personal network through artistic exchanges before defecting to North Korea broke the silence and left many reminiscences and records on the spot as witnesses of history, and functioned as valuable “Memories” to fill in the “Records” that were absent due to division. This study studies five oral histories left by music critic Yong-Koo Pak (1914-2016). In the 1980s and 1990s, when he was reinvoked as the subject of oral history, the restoration of lost history was conducted academically in the dynamic environment of post-Cold War and post-division music academics. The discovery and reexamination of music that was performed as a signifier of “Nation”, such as “National Perfoming Artst” and “National Music”, was popular. In his later years, Yong-Koo Pak restored lost history and artists through “oral history” in addition to field criticism. In this process, memories and reminiscences were reconstructed, or sometimes personal memories, in response to the “ethnic” code popular in academic circles. The topography of objective records and research also conflicted. This study introduces Yong-Koo Pak's oral history materials, the environmental factors of the 1980s and 1990s that enabled him to become a practitioner of oral history, and his memories of Kim Sunnam(1917-1983, composer who defected to North Korea) and his activities with the Ramira Gageukdan(Ramiraga Opera Troupe, 1940-42). Through this, we examine the meaning and problems of the oral history performed by Yong-Koo Pak.
