Abstract
This study aims to examine how modality endings in early 20th-century Korean were realized according to extralinguistic variables, specifically ‘gender’ and ‘age’, using audio data from that period. To this end, a corpus was constructed from gramophone play recordings dating to the early 20th century, and a quantitative analysis was conducted. As a result, the study identified a list of modality endings and their frequencies, confirming that many sentence-final endings from the period actively functioned to express modality. The analysis of gender-based differences revealed that female speakers most frequently used ‘-겠-’ to express speculation or intention, while male speakers most commonly used ‘-군, -구만, -구나’, which convey new realization or discovery of information. In the use of ‘-을까’, male speakers used it to express speculation in 63% of instances, whereas female speakers did so in 88% of cases. This pattern was consistent even within married couples. Moreover, while male speakers used both ‘-겠-’ and ‘-리-’ to express speculation or intention, female speakers exclusively used ‘-겠-’. With regard to age, differences were also observed between senior and junior speakers. Senior speakers most frequently used ‘-군, -구나, -구먼/구만’,whereas junior speakers primarily used ‘-겠-’. Additionally, senior speakers employed ‘-어야지’ and ‘-니-’, which were not used at all by junior speakers. In summary, the usage patterns of modality endings according to gender and age suggest that the modality endings usage of junior speakers closely resembled that of female or wife speakers.
