Abstract
We examine self-selection into single-sex schools and the effects of single-sex school attendance on academic achievement of students by using the choice-based high school lottery program in Seoul in 2010. For students assigned to schools that they chose, there was a positive correlation between single-sex school attendance and academic achievement. In contrast, no such correlation was observed for students assigned to schools that they did not choose. This suggests that students with high prior academic ability tend to prefer single-sex schools, and if this self-selection problem is not controlled, the academic achievement effect of single-sex school attendance may be overestimated.
