Abstract
During the 2023 Asian Games Group E match between the South Korea national soccer team and the Thai national team in Hangzhou, China, Player A, so the paper argues, did not participate in the second half. This paper aims to analyze the 'Player A Controversy,' asserting that his sole purpose for entering the game in the second half was to receive a yellow card, questioning his status as an active soccer player at the time. This paper first explains what the Player A controversy is, and then argues that his actions damaged the reputation of the game by ignoring or at least not considering the opposing team and spectators, and ignored the basic value of mutual respect. The paper subsequently explores this argument in the context of Suits’ philosophy of sports, dividing it into three distinct perspectives: ‘1973 Elements perspective’, ‘1978 Grasshopper perspective’, and ‘1988 Triad perspective’. While the first two perspectives propose that Player A was not actively participating in the game, the Triad perspective contradicts this result, offering an interpretation contrary to the paper's argument, indicating that Player A was indeed playing the game. This perspective suggests that certain actions serve external purposes irrespective of the primary objective of winning (termed as the ‘lusory goal’). However, these actions fall outside the purview of regulative rules, representing ‘unacceptable purposes’. Consequently, the paper contends that there is no established method for filtering out such actions within the framework of the 1988 Triad perspective.
