Abstract
The aim of Habermas’ discourse ethics is to justify moral claims, achieved by idealizing everyday discourse and situating it within an ideal space of communication. This idealized discourse setting allows judgments to be made based on the context of ‘validity’. Similarly, when participants engage in a game, they act according to established rules and principles. In the philosophy of sport, various theories, such as broad internalism (BI), conventionalism, and formalism, have been proposed as frameworks to justify the validity or legitimacy of these actions within the rules and principles. This paper applies Habermas’ discourse ethics to issues in the philosophy of sport, while presenting Suits’ formalism as a way to address these questions. Furthermore, this study argues that this approach provides a defense of formalism within the philosophy of sport. Additionally, it contends that the arguments from conventionalism and BI against formalism can be countered when formalism is examined through the lens of discourse ethics.
