Abstract

This articles is an attempt to analyze war paintings by Wyndham Lewis, the British painter and writer. The modernist’s paintings cannot be separated from his real experiences of World War 1, which is characterized by its unprecedented devastation by the mechanical. As the official war artist, Lewis visualizes his notion of humans as mechanized beings in the modern world. He utilizes experimental techniques of vorticism under the influence of cubism and futurism. In Before Antwerp, the cover image of Blast 2 War Number, he associates war with machinery from a negative viewpoint on the mechanization. In Combat No. 2 humans are more abstract in geometric forms. In A Battery Shelled, his most representative war painting, soldiers are depicted as automata. Their bodies are like the compositions of circular and straight masses with metallic surface. In The Battery Shelled, the moment of shell-shock is depicted, which reflects Lewis’s preoccupation with shell-shock. The lines in vector illustrates the dynamic effect of bombing. Also in Great War Drawing No. 2, Study for ‘To Wipe-Out’ and Officers and Signallers, the explosion of bomb is also depicted. This reflects Lewis’ trauma of shell-shock, a major issue in the recent modernism study. In A Canadian Gun Pit, a black soldier’s leg is identified with the shell he handles. The repetitive pattern of human bodies is conspicuous in Drag-Ropes. Lewis’s paintings illustrate a way the war contributed to modernism. They also suggest how literary and visual works can interact with each other, contributing to the development of both areas.
