Abstract

The Feminine Family History Novel to be studied in this article deals with a chronicle report of a family focusing on daughters or daughters-in-laws. They are mainly written by women novelists, and broke the mirror of Family History Novels that were based on patriarch values. In Feminine Family History Novels, honor and authority of family that are getting degraded due to the disappearance of Real Patriarchism and lethargy, are restored by women. Family rituals are performed by women. They restore the glory of the family, and enforce their rights in the family. They make authority shift by acquiring the women oriented unity. In these novels, authors present diversified rituals from birth, marriage to death and memorial services. Accordingly, this article deals with the ritual ceremonies, and their meanings represented in the Feminine Family History Novel. In the novel, various kinds of ritual ceremonies of family members hosted by a new woman leader create a new spirit, and strengthens the new hierarchy. First, in "Toji (Land)", family rituals are forced as consciousness solidarity by the people who are out of status and blood category. Although, there were no relatives of the heroine by blood and they could not feel solidarity experienced by sharing family consciousness in this novel, we can experience unity of consciousness that is over blood relationships when facing the nuin of Choi's family by surrounding people. Second, in "Mimang" rituals show civilized mixed unity that is driven by third parties out of pure bloodline of family and a matriarch. In this novel we can see the mixed multiple characteristics where family rituals and characteristics are separated from patriarch center and multiplexed. Third, in "Honbul" family rituals such as wedding, birth, and memorial services expand the value of Lee's family that is the head family. However, although, the rituals were driven by the matriarch in this novel, the spirit remained in the patriarch consciousness. As above "Toji", "Mimang and "Honbul", rituals were driven by women, or diversified surrounding people, not by men, so that the authority of family was shifted from the patriarch system. Women show their qualifications as a hostess by performing family rituals as a daughter and daughter-in-law. Therefore, female family history novels cause the shift of authority and power by making a heroine perform family rituals that used to be performed by men, restoring the glory of the family, enforcing the authority and power of women and acquiring women oriented unity.
