Abstract

In Toji, which is evaluated as a family-roman, the contradictions between the reality in which the woman had to identify themselves through maternity and the life as self-reliant-woman are represented as various kinds of maternity. They are the characters who shows devotional maternity to children while being waiting for her runaway husband, who escapes from the family because of her lack of morality or self-reliant choice and loses maternity, and who finds the maternity by adjusting herself to the family system. The author reveals the moral superiority of women through the sacrificing image of mother. She also indicates a problem of the faithfulness-ideology in relation to the maternity and attaches great importance to the recovery of feminity, and on the other hand, she suggests lack of maternity mainly result from moral defect. And she brings up a problem of morality by characterization of two characters who tried to build their families through the medium of maternity in the days when social security toward women was feeble. From the point of view of feminism, the evaluations on Toji are contradictory. However, assuming that Toji is an unique narration in which close exploration of various life is made, it is dangerous to understand and estimate it mainly based upon a character's life. The author attaches great importance to the tolerance of maternity as a basis of compassion and love toward every living, and describes the process in which a mother, as a human being, faces the problems of reality. The result of this research should be connected to discussion in which the author's thought of 'Saengmyung'(living things) and maternity are related to each other.
