Abstract

Central Asian Elements in Koguryo Wall Paintings and Chinese Northern Dynasties Funerary Arts This paper attempts to discern the Central Asian elements in Koguryo wall paintings, one of the distinctive non Han Chinese characteristics of Koguryo tomb paintings which are different from Han Chinese tomb murals. It also tries to compare Central Asian elements in Koguryo wall paintings with those found in the funerary and Buddhist arts of the Northern Dynasties periods in China. Due to the fact that it was the period that the nomadic people such as Koguryo, Xianbei and Turks as well as Sogdians played a significant role in forming the characteristics of funerary and Buddhist arts, we were able to observe many non Han Chinese elements were created and incorporated with the already established Han Chinese art tradition. The wide range of interactions made by Koguryo people with non Han Chinese, Han Chinese, as well as Cental and West Asian people which are exhibited in Koguryo wall paintings provides us with solid evidence that Koguryo tombs and wall paintigs have distinctive own characteristics different from Han Chinese funerary art.
