Abstract
This study aims to interpret the modes and meanings of object imagery in Choi Suchol’s fiction, with a focus on existential consciousness. In particular, it examines the overlapping imagery of fantasy and reality that is prominently featured in his early work Joyful Days in Hell. As indicated by the paradoxical expression in the title, a deliberate strategy of contradiction is employed. The phrase “joyful hell,” composed of conflicting terms, seems to suggest a dichotomy between fantasy and reality; however, from the perspective of object imagery, it rather implies a convergence between the two realms. This functions as a strategy intended to harmonize fantasy and reality. In the text, images are formed through objects. Objects presented in various ways as everyday materials are self-made beings with essence and otherness. The human being with a large-scale existence is located in the position of the subject and is embodied as a being who longs to become the other or forgets his existence by projecting consciousness on objects. In this way, humans lead to the production of fantasies as images based on ‘neuroticism’ and learn meaninglessness, and through this process of anguish, a strategy to seek the meaning of positivity is carried out. This paper traces how the narrative image strategies in Joyful Days in Hell are intertwined with existential themes. The narrative in the text departs from conventional structures and is fragmented into discrete scenes, within each of which objects function as projections of human consciousness. In this way, reality is assimilated into the order of fantasy. The fantastical quality developed through these object images corresponds to a psychological strategy aimed at recognizing and resolving existential meaninglessness. Therefore, it is expected that the interpretation of the object image in Choi Soo-chul’s novel will serve as a starting point for clarifying that fantasy functions as a methodology to embody human existence.
