Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to pay attention to the memory loss phenomenon in Choi Soo-chul’s novel A Cicada, and to clarify its meaning. In the novel, memory loss originates from the oblivion of “being,” which was presented as “pure memory.” At this time, objects are defined as “presences,” and an existential structure in which memories are substituted into “being” is devised. The essence of the novel lies in the matter of existence and temporality. In the narrative, the phenomenon of oblivion of existence appeared to be visualized as the present being and was immersed in “cicada.” The process of transformation that occurred at this time originated from an excess of memory and was revealed as experiencing memory loss by breaking away from the breakdown. Memory is the backbone of human identity. The narrative reminds us that humans have been obsessed with the existence of a breakdown and have forgotten the “being” that forms the core. When memory is separated from the existing through the evasion of breakdown, the fictional self is differentiated into an alter ego. The “self,” which has been carefully explored in Choi’s novel, is the residual of the actions that humans face with existence after being released from memory. The phenomenon of memory loss in the novel does not appeal for simple oblivion, but penetrates the essence of memory. Memory cannot be accumulated and decomposed into breakdowns, reminding us that its shape is originally a repetition of “reconstructed illusions.” Humans liberated from memory are transformed into immediate ones and reach meaning. In the novel, humans capture the moment when they rediscover their forgotten existence while obsessed with beings and deduce it with the finiteness of temporality. This discussion, which analyzed Choi’s novel A Cicada, focusing on the relationship between memory and forgetfulness, will be a meaningful study in revealing the nature of human ontological thinking.
