Abstract

This study examines the historical-theological discourse within Christianity surrounding the Dangun myth, from early Protestant missionaries to contemporary Korean theologians. Protestantism, introduced to Joseon in the late 19th century, pursued new interpretations of indigenous Korean religions and myths as part of its strategy for the indigenization of the gospel. In this process, missionaries adopted the term Hananim, a divine concept familiar to the Korean religious consciousness, which first appeared in the 1906 edition of the Korean New Testament. In particular, some missionaries interpreted the triadic structure of Hwanin, Hwanung, and Dangun as a symbolic representation of the Christian Trinity, thereby promoting the cultural assimilation of the Christian message. This interpretation was further developed theologically in the 1960s by Korean theologian Yoon Sung-bum. Building upon the early efforts of the missionaries, Yoon Sung-bum interpreted the content of the Dangun myth through a Trinitarian lens, and further argued that the myth was influenced by Eastern Christianity, specifically Nestorianism. This trajectory of Christian interpretations of the Dangun myth illustrates a discourse that originated in the modern missionary era’s attempts at indigenization and has since been reinterpreted through contemporary theological reflection, continuing to evolve within the history of Korean Christianity.
