Abstract
In this study, the author investigated the traditional forms of Korean funeral by observing the funeral of an island (Jindo) located in the far southwest of Korea, and identified the present use of prototype that can be included in Korean national culture through storytelling. Therefore, the ultimate purpose of this study is to understand the unique and superior cultural attributes of Korea by researching Korean prototype in the context of purity, to improve its values and promote Korean culture worldwide by using of storytelling, and to present the directions to which the prototype may be succeeded to be developed as cultural contents to become one of the representative brands of Korea. In Jindo, a festive funeral takes place accompanied by Samulnori rhythm, which cannot be seen in Confucian funeral that was introduced in the Joseon dynasty from China. The Jindo funeral includes three forms; Jindo Sitgim-gut, Jindo Dasiraegi, and Jindo Man-ga, and in all of them various musical instruments are played. People play not only Samulnori instruments such as small gongs, drums, janggu, and gongs, but also ajaeng, pipe, and bamboo flute. No more than 30 years ago, a funeral of Jindo was proceeded as follows:at the night before carrying the coffin out of the house, the regular shaman conducted Sitgim-gut in the Dangol-pan contained in the village; villagers and entertainers in the shaman's place for shamanism got together to perform Jindo Dasiraegi, which changed the sorrow of the funeral into enjoyable ambience through songs, dances, and witty remarks; and at the morning of the carrying the coffin out of the house, all the villagers became sangdukuns who carry the coffin, and the one who sang songs well regardless of gender led funeral songs and then the villagers sang the chorus. Usually females led Jindo Man-ga among the sangdukuns, and this phenomenon may be a good example of showing the characteristics of woman in islands who are full of vitality and take the lead in everything. The fact that the Jindo festive funeral includes all the Korea's unique traditional entertainingness in which dances and sings are accompanied evidences that the Jindo festive funeral maintains its characteristics as a primitive synthetic art. The author in this study investigated the practice of the storytelling of Jindo funeral in ‘Jindo Arirang Korean classical folk opera:Ariarirang Please Take Me With You’, a stage performance played in Jindo, in order to identify the way that a prototype of Jindo festive funeral as the original source was milti-used as a form of stage performance. Meanwhile, the author attempted to estimate the diversified possibilities of Jindo festive funeral on its storytelling as a stage performance through investigating the development form of the storytelling in ‘Jindo, Story of Bbangduk's Mother’, which was written on the basis of Kang Jun Seop as a model, Holder of Jindo Dasiraegi as Jungyo Muhyeong Munhwajae No. 81. This attempt is to assess the possibility of development of favorable storytelling with which the unique traditional entertainingness of Jindo festive funeral, decreasing in the frequency of performance, may be succeeded to become a stage performance. This effort is an example that traditional cultural contents may have infinite subject matters of storytelling for Korean performance culture in the future.
