Abstract
During the liberation period, women's changgeuk troupes featuring exclusively female singers emerged. However, little discussion has focused on the cultural practices related to female singers that preceded the advent of women's changgeuk. This paper empirically examines the performances of gwonbeons and women's nongak, emphasizing these as liberation-era cultural phenomena connected to the emergence of women's changgeuk. Gwonbeon operations resumed shortly after liberation and continued for about three years, with performance styles varying by region. In Seoul, the Yeseongsa presented girls' musicals, while in Daegu, the Daedong Gwonbeon performed (gisaeng) changgeuk, In Busan and Gunsan, the gwonbeons performed a (mixed-gender) changgeuk by placing an changgeuk department under its wing. Through these gwonbeon performances, female singers were produced, and the expressive techniques of female singers portraying male roles were practiced. Meanwhile, around 1948, when gwonbeon operations were declining, women’s nongak was planned as a form of folk art and gained popularity. Most of the women responsible for this women’s nongak were female singers who had grown as performers through activities in changgeuk troupes. Women's nongak appropriated nongak, which was known as a male performance, as an exclusively female performance, paved the way for the emergence of women's changgeuk, featuring only female singers.
