A Study on the Records of Costume in the Period of King Gongmin of Goryeo

The period of King Gongmin of Goryeo is from 1351 up till 1374. The year of 1351 when he was enthroned was the eleventh year of Sunje of Yuan. In the inside of Goryeo then, the rise of powerful men connected with Yuan’s power under its political influence reduced royal authority. Meanwhile, in the outside of Goryeo, with the support of Baekryeongyodo, Juwonjang joined in Honggunjuk, one of the repelling powers against Yuan founded Ming in the 17th year of King Gongmin (1368), appearing as a new supreme ruler of the battlefield. Thus, it can be said that the period of King Gongmin was in the middle of a severe upheaval. The costume system in the period of King Gongmin continued until Joseon even after the downfall of Goryeo. Joseon preserved much part of the system established in the 19th year of King Gongmin or the system in the period of King Injong, and this lasted up until the end of Joseon. Because the costume system in the period of King Gongmin played a significant role as a turning point in the formation of Korean traditional costume, it is thought that the changes of it are necessary to be profoundly approached. Based on the records of costume in the period of King Gongmin, Goryeo as a subject state of a great power constantly altered it in the international circumstances with changeful national relations. Records about forbidding the pigtail and Manchu garments imply anti-Yuan policy and Goryeo’s recovery of old systems and establishment of a new costume system. And records on Cheongsagwanbok (請賜冠服) reflect Goryeo’s autonomous national rights recovery and King Gongmin’s policy to get back its autonomy in the international relations. In conclusion, it can be seen that costume and political changes had close relations and the costume was used as some sort of crucial political means.
