Abstract
This study aims to identify the causes of inter-regional wage disparities at a granular regional level. To this end, we analyzed the panel data from the Regional Employment Survey from 2013 to 2023 at the level of 162 cities and counties. In constructing the spatial weight matrix, we compared the results using a commuting matrix in addition to a geographical approach. The results of wald-tests for spatial dependency indicated that all models had statistically significant effects. In the analysis of regional effects, even after controlling for individual characteristics, the effects of regional human capital and industrial composition had a statistically significant positive effect on the regional wage. However, the effect of population size was not statistically significant after controlling for individual characteristics. Finally, we derived policy implications that people-based and place-based policies should harmonize to alleviate regional and local inequality.
