Abstract

This study aims to analyze the weaving techniques of gold thread-embroidered Jik-Seong Hyoongbae from the Joseon Dynasty and to explore its modern reproduction utilizing a Jacquard handloom. The Jik-Seong Hyoongbae, a fabric distinguished by its supplementary weft patterning technique, which creates patterns only in specific areas, presents reproduction challenges that are difficult to overcome with existing fully automated Jacquard looms. This study involved a detailed analysis of the warp and weft characteristics and the gold thread arrangement of extant artifacts, confirming the potential for weaving using Jacquard handlooms. While 1,200-hook Jacquard devices are commonly employed in traditional weaving technique, typically producing patterns with 10cm repeats across the fabric width, the gold thread-embroidered Jik-Seong Hyoongbae, with its full-width and varied patterns, requires a 12,000-hook, fully automated, full-width Jacquard loom. These specialized looms are rarely found, existing only in a limited number of modern weaving factories within Korea. Experiments were conducted using a 1,200-hook Jacquard handloom, wherein pattern designs and fabric widths were varied to demonstrate the feasibility of reproduction. Based on these findings, the peacock gold thread-embroidered Jik-Seong Hyoongbae from a Danryeong, which is a round collar robe excavated from an unclaimed grave in Seoknam-dong, Incheon, was successfully reproduced. A comparative analysis of the reproduced fabric with the original artifact revealed a close replication of the weave structure and gold thread arrangement, with minor size variations attributed to differences in yarn tension and weft density. Through its empirical approach to the modern restoration of traditional woven fabrics using a Jacquard handloom, this study contributes valuable data to preserving and inheriting traditional textile cultural properties, specifically the gold thread-embroidered Jik-Seong Hyoongbae. Future research focusing on the reproduction of diverse woven fabric types will further refine the methods for preserving traditional weaving techniques and exploring their modern applications.
