Abstract
This study examines the composition and characteristics of needle cases norigae excavated from the tomb of a mother and child of the Papyeong Yoon clan (?-1566). Although needle case norigae artifacts have been identified from the Goryeo Dynasty to modern times, those from the late Joseon Dynasty and later often lack precise production dates. The Papyeong Yoon clan's needle case norigae are significant because they originate from a relatively well-defined period, and multiple pieces were excavated together from a single tomb, enabling comparative analysis. Their composition is consistent, comprising a ring, central part, and tassel, all crafted from textiles. The fabrics used predominantly include plain weave, twill weave, satin weave, and compound weave. The most significant variation occurs in the material of the central part, with examples employing Lampas, which is a variant compound weave, a 4-warp twisted gauze weave, and a 5-harness satin weave. The primary decorative technique is embroidery. Satin stitch was used to finish the edges of the central part, and in one instance, a need-looping stitch and jinggeum stitch were also employed. The needle cases excavated from the Papyeong Yoon clan's tomb are early Joseon Dynasty artifacts demonstrating a standardized composition while simultaneously showcasing individual expression through fabric weaves and decorative techniques. It is recommended that further study be actively pursued by discovering and analyzing additional artifacts in the future.
