Abstract
The purpose of this study is to synthesize findings from the literature on career chance experiences published in Korean journals from the perspective of human resource development. The relevant articles were analyzed in terms of publication period, fields of the study the journals belong to, research paradigm and method, and theoretical frameworks and research topics in comparison with corresponding research literature published in English journals. In Korea, the research interests in the topic arose since 2010 more actively within the fields of counseling/psychology and career and vocational behaviors. In addition, more quantitative research focusing on planned happenstance skills in relation to other career-related variables have been conducted mostly based on the sample of college students. There were only few conceptual/theoretical articles unlike the English literature. In the qualitative research, the participants were rather workers than students as found in English literature. In terms of research topic, the most prevalent topic was effective skills to deal with unexpected chance events. There were also some articles about the types and attributes of chance events, personal outcomes and the meaning of the experiences, and influencing factors. In future research, it is necessary to explore people’s career chance experiences in various career stages and vocational fields, delve into personal growth and learning during their experiences, strengthen theoretical foundations that explain the phenomenon, and find organizational implications from a human resource development perspective
