Abstract

Recently, there has been a growing focus on the “ugly face of leadership” in leadership studies. With a growing scholarship on the dysfunctional aspects of leadership, one area of interest has been the concept of “despotic leadership.” Despotic leadership encompasses numerous characteristics of negative leadership, particularly those that have a significant impact on deviant behavior. The purpose of this study is to empirically demonstrate this, particularly in relation to deviant behavior influenced by despotic leadership. In this study, to examine how despotic leadership influences deviant behavior among members through the exertion of its influence, we first confirmed the relationship between despotic leadership and members’ deviant behavior. We then explored the mediating role of anger in the relationship between despotic leadership and deviant behavior. Finally, we verified the moderating effect of cognitive reappraisal on the effects of despotic leadership to anger. Empirical analysis results revealed the following: First, despotic leadership was found to have a positive effect on members’ deviant behavior. Second, members’ anger appropriately explained the influence process of despotic leadership on deviant behavior. Third, cognitive reappraisal was identified as a factor that negatively moderates the effects of despotic leadership on members’ anger. Additionally, the results of the moderated mediation analysis indicated that cognitive reappraisal indirectly affects the despotic leadership’s impact through members’ anger to deviant behavior. Implications, limitations, and future research directions were discussed based on the findings of this study.
