Abstract

Ahn, Soo-Woong. 2004. An Acoustic Study of English and Korean Vowels Revisited. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-1, 45-62. The present study is a reanalysis of Ahn's 2001 study on English and Korean vowels with more data and gender difference added. For American English (AE) vowels, ten AE speakers pronounced English words. For Korean vowels ten Kyongsang and ten Seoul dialect speakers pronounced Korean words. The 13 English vowel spaces maintained their relative positions with some overlaps. Clear distinctions were found for pairs of i-ɪ, e-ɛ, u-ʊ, o-ɔ, ɜ-ʌ, and ə-ʌ. Pairs of ə-ɜ and e-ɪ partially overlapped. The domain of ɔ and ɑ overlapped for six out of ten AE speakers. The 8 Korean vowel spaces of Kyongsang and Seoul dialect speakers were identical in their positions. No distinction was made between e and ɛ. The present data supports the theory that the Korean ə was driven to the mid-back area to achieve maximized contrast. (Pukyong National University)
