Lee, Doo-Won. 2004. Syntactic Configuration and Output Effects. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-1, 63-84. The aim of this paper is to show within the framework of the Minimalist Program that in Korean, subject raising, which makes a vP-subject with overt Case undergo movement to SPEC-T (cf. Chomsky 2000), must occur prior to the output effect (Chomsky 2001), which triggers object shift. In this vein, we suggest that TP is a syntactic domain, where Agree Move, not Agree-less Move, reflects configurationality of the subject-object canonical order. We further suggest that the basic structure, which reflects configurationality, is a basic phase one (i.e., a vP-structure), where neither subject raising nor an output effect arises. We also show that the Agree-less Move of a vP-object to SPEC-Foc over TP and that of a VP-object to SPEC-Foc between vP and TP can induce "reconstruction," whereas the Agree Move of a vP-subject to SPEC-T and that of a VP-object to SPEC-v cannot. Abstract
