Abstract

Incheol Choi. 2004. A Unification-based Constructional Approach to English Tough Constructions. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-2, 167-197. This paper addresses the issue of how the variants of English tough predicate constructions, i.e. extraposed/sentential subject constructions and tough constructions, are related in their semantic and syntactic properties. This issue is crucially dependent on how tough constructions are analyzed. It has been argued that the subject of tough constructions has an independent semantic role, or, alternatively, is dependent on the object gap of the embedded complement clause without an independent semantic role. The analysis in this paper supports the latter position and suggests that the variants of tough predicates are identical in semantic role relations, but different in syntactic subcategorization and discourse function. By adopting Koenig's (1999) Type Underspecified Hierarchical Lexicon and HPSG framework, I show that the three types of tough predicates can be represented by one lexeme. In this analysis, the specific tough adjective is realized via unification of the underspecified lexeme and specific type constraints. (Kyung Hee University)
