Abstract
This paper pursued a lexical and constraint-based approach to the English Phrasal Verb Constructions (PVCs): e.g., John turned the radio on/John takes after his father. It is proposed that the analysis of the semi-productive PVCs require interactions of the rich lexical constraints induced by the HPSG-style hierarchical lexicon, schematic X0 formation rule, and individual lexical entries. It is also shown that how the various relevant syntactic issues―the part of speech of the particles, preposition positioning, passivization, adverb intervention, pied piping, and idiomaticity―are accounted for by the proposed analysis.
