Abstract
Choi, Hye-Won. 2004. Focus and Specificity in Wh-Scrambling: An OT Account. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-2, 137-166. This paper examines scrambling of wh-phrases in Korean and accounts for the presence and lack of specificity and focus effects in scrambling by means of constraint ranking in Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993). It will be argued that scrambling is motivated not only syntactically but also semantically and pragmatically (Choi 1996, 1999), so that depending on the ranking of the relevant syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic constraints, the specificity and focus effects may or may not emerge.
