Abstract

This paper attempts to provide a more complete and a richer analysis of the so-called tough construction in English and in Korean. This paper claims that there are various factors to be taken care of syntactically and semantically in order to account for tough constructions. One of the factors that are crucial to the analysis is how to semantically relate various roles of the upper and lower clauses. One of the lexical peculiarities of tough adjectives is that they generally require an NP (as part of a ‘for+NP’ complement) that can denote sentient entities as an experiencer role bearer. Another point is that such an NP is in turn co-indexed with the role that is higher than any others within the thematic hierarchy of the embedded subordinate clause predicate. It has been further proposed that tough constructions have a non-lexical constraint that bars co-indexing the instigator of the matrix clause and the highest thematic role bearer of the embedded clauses. In Korean, two types of tough constructions are identified and discussed. One of the recalcitrant problems in Korean syntax is how to identify a subject and the same problem reappears in Korean tough constructions in a way that defies any easy identification of the two types, contra Chae (1998).
