This paper examines the modal reading of a Korean sentence that contains the bound noun swu. It yields both epistemic and root readings, but its co-occurrence with a tense morpheme affects the modal reading. Previous researchers (Ha 2007, Chung 2007, Kim 2010, Kim 2014) accounted for the modal readings in terms of two separate structures for epistemic and root modals. This paper presents an alternative analysis within the framework of Combinatory Categorial Grammar (Steedman 1996, 2000, 2012, Baldridge 2002). Following previous work on English modals (e.g. Perlmutter 1971, Jackendoff 1972, Ross 1985), I propose different lexical entries for the epistemic swu and the root swu, and develop a compositional analysis of the interaction between tense and the two variants of swu.
