Lee, Jungmee. 2018. Korean modal sentences and their interactions with NPIs. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 43-2, 331-354. This paper examines the modal readings of Korean sentences that contain the bound noun swu and Negative Polarity Items (NPIs). While swu can give rise to both the epistemic and the root readings, its occurrence with NPIs affects the availability of each modal reading. Previous authors (Ha 2007, Chung 2007, Kim 2014) argue for two separate syntactic structures for epistemic and root modals, and account for the modal readings of swu-sentences in terms of the proposed syntactic structures. In this paper, I propose to analyze the availability of each modal reading in terms of an independently motivated constraint on the scopal interaction between modals and NPIs (e.g. Sells & Kim 2006). Building on Lee (2017), I provide the syntactic and semantic derivations of swu-sentences with NPIs within the framework of Combinatory Categorial Grammar (e.g. Steedman and Baldridge 2011, Steedman 2012).
