Abstract
Seung-Ah Lee. 2004. Pseudocleft Constructions in English. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-2, 237-260. This paper argues against Williams's (1983, 1994) proposal that in specificational pseudoclefts the wh-constituent is the predicate, whereas the post-be constituent is the subject of predication. Williams's (1983, 1994) use of raising to identify subjects is arguably a reliable diagnostic test. However, the results of an investigation into the British component of the International Corpus of English (ICE-GB) suggest that the use of agreement as a diagnostic for subjecthood is subject to qualification. Moreover, there are specificational pseudoclefts à la Higgins (1979) that cannot be accounted for by Williams's (1983, 1994) diagnostics. Hence, Williams's (1983, 1994) idea that the copula be of specificational pseudoclefts should be treated as a be of predication cannot be upheld. (University of Cambridge)
