Abstract
Cho, Sungeun. 2006. The Configuration of Non-verbal, Non-nominal Small Clause Structures in English. Korean Journal of Linguistics 31-4, 637-656. This paper is centered around two issues that left open in earlier accounts and aims to shed light on two different small clause structures. The presence of durative adverbial in small clauses containing stage-level predicates supports Castillo's (2001) assumption that small clauses containing stag-level predicates have an functional projection AspP. Following this, I assume that this type of small clauses have an AspP. The analysis advanced here departs from Castillo (2001) in that small clauses containing individual-level predicates have no aspectual projections. This assumption reflects Carlson's (1980) original idea that individual-level predicates do not extend over time and cannot be divided into stages. The analysis advanced here also accounts for Case-valuation when two types of small clauses are nominalized. A subject in a small clause containing individual-level predicates undergoes movement to have its Case feature valued. By contrast, a subject in a small clause containing stage-level predicates gets its Case feature valued without movement. The difference in the manner of Case valuation captures why small clauses in the former type cannot function as units for movement-like operation, unlike ones in the latter type.
